My Book of the Week is the Norton Anthology of African American Literature. This book is a compilation of writings from the likes of James Baldwin, Countee Cullen, Gewndolyn Brooks, Langston Hughes, Frederick Douglass, and countless others. This nearly 3,000 page book should be read by all. In my opinion it is a book that should be used as a teaching tool in K-12 schools. This book was required reading for one of my classes in college. The contents of this book changed my life and created a space of self discovery in understanding my past so that I could be better prepared for my future. It outlines the psyche of slaves in America and the record of their experiences in bondage. This book also lays out the tragectory of progress of African Americans. This book is accompanying my blog post this week; What to the Slave is the Fouth of July? as within its pages allows for Black people in this country to be SEEN. One of the major problems in this country is the deliberate and outright denial of the history of African Americans. Our history is American history, our history is painful, our history is woven within the fabric and planted within the soil of this land. As you read the pages in this book I ask that you SEE the truth.
