“Having a clear view of the distorted images and painful stereotypes that make America a crooked room for African American Women is the first step toward understanding how these stereotypes influence Black Women as political actors.” -Melissa Harris Perry

This book is what I describe as the Black Women’s Bible. What I mean by this is that as Black Women knowing ourselves and the things that influence us should be practiced religiously. It is imperative that we dig deep and further understand Black Women as their full selves. This book does exactly that. It dissects the shame and stereotypes that Black Women navigate through in America. I first read this book for a college course during a time in my life when I was going through so many changes. This book saved me, educated me, and more importantly empowered me. It allowed me to better understand who I was in relation to my relationships with men, friends, family, and professionally. Harris-Perry shows the humanity of Black Women in such a way that I have never seen. Plainly put, go get the book!
